MGD

MGD, or meibomian gland dysfunction, happens when the oil glands along the eyelid margin become blocked, thickened, inflamed, or unable to release healthy oils into the tear film. Because these glands help keep tears from evaporating too quickly, MGD is commonly associated with dry eye symptoms, burning, grittiness, watery eyes, redness, light sensitivity, and recurring eyelid discomfort. In Demodex blepharitis, lash-line buildup, collarettes, cylindrical dandruff, itchy eyelids, and chronic lid margin irritation may contribute to an unhealthy eyelid environment that affects meibomian gland function. This section explains how MGD may overlap with Demodex-related eyelid concerns and what lash-line clues to look for.
