Oily scalp happens when the scalp produces or holds excess sebum, leaving the roots feeling greasy, heavy, coated, or dirty soon after washing. It may be linked with hormones, seborrheic dermatitis, Malassezia imbalance, product buildup, overwashing, harsh shampoos, sweat, humidity, or scalp barrier disruption. In Demodex-related scalp concerns, excess oiliness may appear with itching, crawling or tickling sensations, greasy flakes, follicle bumps, redness, tenderness, scalp odor, buildup around the follicles, or recurring irritation that does not behave like ordinary dandruff. Because Demodex mites live around hair follicles and oil glands, an oily scalp environment may overlap with follicle congestion, scalp inflammation, and stubborn scalp discomfort patterns. This section explains how oily scalp may connect with Demodex, sebum buildup, and recurring scalp irritation.
